Czechs and Germans intensify the fight against rampant cross-border drug
trafficking

The Czech and German interior ministers on Thursday pledged to intensify
cooperation at all levels to curb a flourishing cross-border drug trade in
crystal methamphetamine. Despite tightened border controls, Czech suppliers
are meeting growing demand in the southern and eastern parts of Germany
which border on the Czech Republic and where an increasing number of young
people are falling prey to the highly-addictive stimulant.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid a one-day working visit to

'Atmospheric disturbance' possible but no storms ahead for Czech-German
relations

The final days of campaigning before the weekend's presidential election
were marked by a bitter row over the postwar Benes decrees that legitimised
the expulsion of three and a half million ethnic Germans from
Czechoslovakia. Certainly 'the German card' appears to have played a role,
if not a decisive one, in the election of Milos Zeman over Karel
Schwarzenberg - an aristocrat who spent four decades living in Austria and
whose Austrian wife doesn't speak Czech. Mr Zeman's campaign rhetoric has
upset some in neighbouring Germany and Austria - but what impact will this
have on relations between Czechs and their German-speaking neighbours?
Peter Brod is a Prague-born journalist who spent many years living in
Bavaria.

The venue, the Czech National Museum’s New Building, is wholly

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Prime Minister Petr
Nečas on Wednesday as part of a brief visit before heading to Germany. The
aim was to thank his Czech counterpart for supporting Israel’s stance
against the Palestinian Authority gaining a non-member observer status at
the UN. The Czech Republic was one of only nine nations that voted against
the resolution at last Thursday’s meeting of the General Assembly – a
decision that drew criticism from many sides.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Prague on Monday, on the

Clinton made a pitch for the US firm Westinghouse, which is in competition
with a Russian-led consortium for a multi-billion-dollar Czech nuclear
project. She says the US bid offers the best technology and highest
security – and would reduce the Czech Republic’s dependence on Russian

Czech President Václav Klaus has weighed in on the case of two Czech
nationals held in Greece on espionage charges. The two men, both
professional video game developers, were arrested in September on the Greek
island of Lemnos after they took photos of local military installations.
But they say they were only collecting material for a new game. Mr Klaus
has now appealed to the president of Greece, asking him to follow the case
with special attention.

during Austrian visit

President Václav Klaus on Thursday concludes a three-day state visit to
Austria. During his trip, the Czech president met with the Austrian
president and prime minister, launched a Czech-Austrian business forum and
visited the Austrian Parliament. But his last visit to the neighbouring
country as the Czech head of state did little to improve the strained
relations between the two countries.

NATO Secretary General: in times of austerity, allies need to pool
resources

The Czech Parliament has just been hosting an annual session of the NATO
Parliamentary Assembly, which serves as a consulting body to the alliance.
Much of the debate was devoted to the financing of the armed forces at a
time of economic austerity. So how can NATO’s defence capabilities be
maintained when member states are cutting their defence budgets? That’s a
question Czech Radio’s Pavel Novák put to NATO Secretary General Anders
Fogh Rasmussen.

Prague reassures Serbian foreign minister of continued support

The Czech and Serbian foreign ministers met in Prague on Monday, discussing
Serbia’s candidacy for EU accession and the two country’s relations.
The tensions over Czech Republic’s recognition of Kosovo back in 2008
seemed to be a thing of the past. Serbia became an official candidate for
EU accession in March of this year, and it is looking to strengthen ties
with all of its European supporters.

The annual international conference USA and European Union Days, which took
place in Prague earlier this month, focused this year among other issues on
the recent European currency and budgetary crisis, as well as on the
economic situation in the US. Czech Radio’s Václav Sochor spoke to two
former US secretaries of the treasury under the Clinton administration,
Robert Rubin and Lawrence Summers, about their views on the ongoing crisis
in the Eurozone, and their country’s approach to it.

German President Joachim Gauck arrived in Prague on Wednesday for an
action-packed one day visit. Talks with Czech top officials, a meeting with
Cardinal Dominik Duka and a visit to Lidice village symbol of Nazi
atrocities in WWII, gave this visit by a German head of state a new
dimension.

President Václav Klaus' speech to the UN General Assembly in New York on
Tuesday placed a strong focus on Syria. But instead of calling for
effective action, as some other world leaders had, the Czech president
took
a more cautious stance, questioning the wisdom of external military
interventions.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Nečas has come under criticism from some members
of his government, several Czech NGOs and even exporters over his
statement
about human rights and their relation to the economy. Mr Nečas said that
support for the Dalai Lama or jailed members of the Russian punk band
Pussy
Riot might have a negative impact on trade relations. This earned him
accusations that his words ran contrary to the country’s official
foreign
policy.
