Regional dishes to attract more tourists to Czech Republic
Sour rye soup from the Giant Mountains, the south Bohemian štrachanda or
rump steak goulash from Prague, these are just some of the Czech
specialties, that will appear on the menus of Czech restaurants as of
April. Czech Tourism, in cooperation with the Czech Association of Hotels
and Restaurants and the Association of Cooks and Confectioners, have
prepared a special project with the aim of promoting the Czech Republic
through regional specialties. These dishes will appear on menus under the
label ‘Czech Specials’.

Mladá Boleslav – an industrial town with an ancient history
A rumbling engine drowns out the sounds of fellow passengers on the bus
–somehow fitting on a visit to Mladá Boleslav, a town synonymous with
cars and car engines. A little over a century ago, the first Czech
bicycle,
the first motorcycle, and eventually the first motorised buggy
rolled out of what was then a modest factory in the town owned by mechanic
Václav Laurin and former bookseller Václav Klement. Mladá Boleslav has
been known for its car production ever since. More
Temelín nuclear power plant – one of the country’s more unusual tourist attractions
The southern Bohemian nuclear power plant Temelín has long been a thorn in
the side of anti-nuclear activists. Its operator, the power utility ČEZ,
insists that the Soviet-designed plant is perfectly safe and is now working
to improve its image. It has launched an advertising campaign to attract
visitors to its information centre, which seems to be bearing fruit, as
Jana Gribbinová from the power plant explains:

From As To Zlin…and back again - 19 days on Czech local trains
This summer, Rob Cameron and his former Radio Prague colleague Nick Carey
– now of Chicago, Illinois - spent nineteen days travelling across the
Czech Republic by train. The trains were very, very slow, giving them
enough time to see a huge number of places on the way. They set foot in
more than 80 towns and villages, crossed the border into Germany, Poland,
Slovakia and Austria, and trundled over more than 2,000 km of track.
They’re currently writing a book about their experiences. This is an
audio diary of that trip - From As To Zlin…and back again. More
Ceska Lipa
If you want to see something else than just another historical sight
crowded with tourists, visit the north Bohemian town of Ceska Lipa about
two hours drive from Prague to get a more genuine taste of the Czech
Republic. Ceska Lipa suffered a similar fate as many other towns in the
border region and reflects very well the turbulent post-war development of
the country. For those who prefer nature to history, there is also plenty
to see. More
Biking in the Jizera Mountains with cycling champion Jan Kopka
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to interview extreme mountain
biker Jan Kopka for Radio Prague's Czechs Today [25.04.2007], only weeks
after the rider had won the world's toughest race: the Iditarod Trail
Invitational. Iditarod sees riders take on 1,800 kilometres in the dead of
winter in the Alaskan outback, an incredible feat in which one's life is
constantly in the balance. Now, Jan has returned to his home in Jablonec
Nad Nisou in picturesque northern Bohemia, and a chance to join him on
local trails was too good to pass up. Jan was kind enough to take me on a
number of nicer routes in the nearby Jizera Mountains, where he has spent
many hours in the saddle.

Tourist of the day - day 2
All this week, Radio Prague is running a series of interviews with its
'tourists of the day'. Yesterday, we had Andy from England, planning a
quiet weekend away with his partner (or so he said). Today, we have two
Turkish visitors, who are no strangers to Prague's nightclubs. They started
by telling us what they were doing:
