Czech ice hockey veteran, Jaromír Jágr, has signed a one-year contract
with the Canadian NHL club, the Calgary Flames. The deal comes on the eve
of the start of the new season.
Jágr, 45, has been for weeks seeking a new team as a free agent after his former contract with the Florida Panthers was not extended at the end of the last season.
The new deal could allow Jágr to set a new record for NHL league starts.
The TSN sports news channel has reported that Canadian NHL ice hockey club,
the Calgary Flames, are very hopeful about signing Czech veteran Jaromír
Jágr after initial talks. Jágr, 45, who last season played for the
Florida Panthers with 16 goals and 30 assists, is a free agent looking for
a team after being dropped by the club at the end of the season.
Rumours peaked last week that Jágr might return to play for local Czech club, the Kladno Knights, which he owns. The player later said that talks about possible NHL openings would detain him. The NHL season is about to start.
Future hockey hall of famer Jaromír Jágr will announce on October 5 which
hockey team he will play with this season, according to reports citing KHL
insider Aivis Kalnins, who in turn referred to the player’s agent.
Jágr, 45, has not received offers for a one-year-contract in the National Hockey League despite having a productive season last year. Earlier this week, Jágr said he would not agree to a team try-out in the NHL and that the KHL was also a possibility.
In mid-August, the forward said he had considered a return to the Czech Republic, where he would play for Kladno, a hockey club he owns. Playing in the Czech Republic would give him freedom to cancel his contract should an NHL offer come through or would allow him to play in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
Czech hockey player David Pastrňák signed a new contract with the Boston
Bruins on Thursday following lengthy negotiations.
The 21-year-old signed a six-year deal worth 40 million dollars. The right winger scored a career-high 34 goals last season; he also had 36 assists and had a plus-11 rating in 75 games.
Star forward, Jaromír Jágr, meanwhile, is still without an offer.
Hockey goalie Marek Mazanec, 26, is returning to Europe after signing with Slovan Bratislava in the KHL. The player agreed to a one-year-deal. Four years ago the Písek native, who had helped Plzeň clinch the Extraliga title, departed for the NHL after signing with Nashville. In his first season, he played 25 games with the Predators but then got only six starts over the next three years and played mostly for the club’s farm team in the AHL. He was originally expected to continue with Nashville but opted for Slovan instead.
Czech ice hockey legend Jaromír Jágr’s contract with the Florida Panthers has not been renewed ahead of the new season, meaning he must find a new club. The Panthers announced that the club regretted that it was seeking a new direction which did not include the 45 year old Czech. Local media say the new coach, Bob Boughner, did not see Jágr as part of the future set up. Jágr had wanted to stay on in Florida. He remarked on his Twitter account last week that he had no responses from approaches to various clubs.
Hockey legend Jaromír Jágr, set to be a free agent as of July 1, has tweeted a number of jokes that so far no teams have shown an interest. The player, who is 45, is known for a rigorous training program and has expressed the intention of playing for years to come, posted 46 points this season with the Florida Panthers. Jágr joked that instead of clubs calling him, he was calling them but that no one was picking up.
The Boston Bruins’ David Pastrňák has become the youngest player ever to win the Golden Hockey Stick for best Czech ice hockey player of the year. Speaking at the award ceremony in Prague on Tuesday night, the 21-year-old forward said he had dreamed of winning the poll when he was picked up the junior Golden Hockey Stick two years ago. Twelve-time winner Jaromír Jágr, who is 45, came eighth this year.
