An old-fashioned Advent: Not your grandma's carp and potato salad

Fried carp and potato salad is today the 'bread and butter' of any traditional Czech Christmas meal. But this was not always so. Pious Czechs once used to fast at Christmas; they then took to cooking meatless dishes, such as sweet porridge with dried fruits. Slowly, fish - and finally, carp -- became the most common fasting meal. In this week's Panorama, however, we go along to a tasting of Advent and Christmas dishes that predate - by centuries - the carp and potato salad tradition. Some recipes date back to the Middle Ages and are long forgotten; others - like crispy frogs legs -- were all the rage among the chattering classes here just a century ago. More

Aenne Burda, photo: CTK Aenne Burda, the founder of the Burda-Moden fashion publishing group and one of Germany's most successful businesswomen, died on Thursday aged 96. During communist times, Burda magazine was one of only very few sources of inspiration for Czech women. Copies of the magazine were circulated readily among Czech women who made their own clothes based on the magazine's patterns, which were markedly different from those available in Czechoslovakia at the time.  More

Government approves national family policy

The Czech Republic currently has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, second only to Ukraine and China. Although there are conflicting views as to whether the state should interfere with demographic trends, the government has now approved a national family policy which would make it easier for Czechs to have children and enjoy parenthood.  More
