The Little Clown Project – a new generation of Czech volunteers at work
In the Czech Republic, where the state controlled everything under
Communism, volunteering does not enjoy a long tradition. But some 20 years
after the demise of the former regime, more and more young volunteers are
actively changing the face of their country. One of them is Petra
Milsimerová, who runs a project called Little Clown. More
Study: Obesity, smoking and drug abuse on the rise among Czech adolescents
Czech researchers from the University of Olomouc made a significant
contribution to the latest Health Behavior of School-Aged Children Research
Study. Sadly, its conclusions point to a worrying trend: Czech adolescents,
and their counterparts across Europe, are living an increasingly sedentary
lifestyle. As a result, obesity, drug abuse and smoking among those aged 18
and under are on the rise. We spoke to one of the Czech researchers
involved in the international study, Michal Kalman. More
Czech team designs computerized playground
Getting youngsters to play outside on a sunny day is an increasingly
difficult task. Most parents now find it near impossible to pry their
children away from their computers and compared to the wonders of virtual
reality kids no longer find outdoor activities as attractive. Czech
designer Pavel Tuma and his team have now unveiled a revolutionary 5-D
playground that aims to change that. More
Legislators approve changes covering denial of fatherhood
Czech lawmakers have approved changes to legislation covering the denial of
fatherhood, overriding an earlier Senate veto. The amendment will extend a
previous six month period for denying fatherhood (upon learning the
biological parent was someone else) to three years. Experts have argued the
earlier time frame was too short; at stake, of course, are not just the
rights of the parent, but also of the child. More

Prague court delivers landmark ruling in home births advocates’ battle with the state
A ruling on Thursday by a Prague court might lead to a breakthrough in the
ongoing Czech debate about home births. While state officials and health
care providers have consistently opposed the practice over safety concerns,
the court decided that mothers indeed have the right to choose the place of
their child’s delivery, and the state has to provide all necessary
assistance. More
Home births back in spotlight as group of pregnant women take their case to European Court of Human Rights
A woman's right to give birth at home is back in the spotlight in the Czech
Republic, as a group of pregnant women intend to file a complaint at the
European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The Czech state makes planned
home births virtually impossible; there are midwives qualified to deliver
babies at home, but they lack official registration and insurance companies
won't cover them. More
Parents of “wolf children” on trial at Prague city court for child neglect
The mother and father of two boys, dubbed “wolf children” by the Czech
media, are currently on trial at a Prague city court. In a shocking and
unusual case of child abuse, the parents never let their sons out of the
apartment, did not dress them and fed them only liquid food. They deny
charges of abuse and say they simply wanted to raise their children in an
alternative way. More

Is the Czech baby boom over and did it ever happen?
In recent years the media, including Radio Prague, repeatedly reported
about the Czech Republic experiencing a baby boom. It seemed obvious:
statisticians reported increasing birth figures, maternity hospitals were
bursting at the seams and mothers had to register months ahead of their
delivery to secure a place. So is the baby boom now over and in fact –
did it ever happen? More
