A Czech anti-corruption watchdog is helping citizens at several sites
around the county to prepare referenda for or against plans for massive
solar power plants. It is taking the unusual step because it says local
politicians are riding roughshod over their wishes and curbing democratic
discussion to get a share of the huge amounts of cash at stake.

Small planes manufacturer Evektor unveils sleek but tough 10-seater
Moravian small planes manufacturer Evektor, based near Zlin, has reason to
celebrate: on Wednesday the firm – which specialises in two-seat aircraft
– rolled out its first larger passenger plane in 40 years. The sleek EV
55 Outback, is designed for extreme conditions (hence the name) and is
expected to go into commercial production in roughly three years’ time.

Škoda Auto steers through challenging market conditions in 2009
The Czech Republic’s biggest car maker, Škoda Auto, has just announced
mixed results for last year. Car sales hit a new record high, but turnover
was down and profit dropped by around two-thirds compared with the year
before. This year also looks like being a big challenge.
