Since 2004 Holocaust Memorial Day has been officially marked in the Czech Republic. It falls on 27th January, the day when Auschwitz was liberated by the Red Army in 1945.
During the German occupation of the Czech Lands more than 77,000 Czech and Moravian Jews were murdered.
Names of all the known victims on the walls of the Pinkas Synagogue
Today we can read the names and dates of birth of all the known victims on the walls of the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague. At least 6,000 Czech Roma were also murdered. Only a small percentage of Jewish and Romany Czechs survived the Holocaust.

Prague link established with Shoah Foundation video archive of Holocaust survivors
Prague is one of a few sites in Europe that has been chosen as an access point for Hollywood director Steven Spielberg’s collection of Holocaust recollections. The link with the Spielberg-financed Shoah Foundation has already created strong interest locally after only a few weeks.

Lukáš Přibyl’s series of documentaries, ‘Forgotten Transports’, depicts a lesser-known side of the Holocaust, played out in locations a lot less notorious than Belsen or Auschwitz. The films have been subject to an overwhelming amount of critical acclaim ever since the final installment, ‘Forgotten Transports to Poland’ was premiered in March 2009.
