Slavětice inhabitants approve Dukovany expansion, say “no” to nuclear waste dump

The majority of Slavětice inhabitants have approved the construction of a fifth unit at the country’s oldest nuclear plant in Dukovany. In a referendum held on Sunday 89 inhabitants voted in favour of expansion, 60 were against. However the town strongly rejected the building of a nuclear waste dump in the vicinity, with 136 votes against and only 11 in favour. The town is located just two kilometres from the plant. A “no” to expansion would have meant losing a 2.2 million crown subsidy from the power utility ČEZ, which operates the plant.
