Business News Authorities fear electricity shortage in winter

22-08-2002 | Vladimír Tax

The national power grid operator CEPS warned that there is a danger of electricity shortage in winter and that it will be necessary to reduce consumption. The floods have put power generators with a total capacity of 1500 MW out of operation. This represents a fifth of the country's total consumption. Power consumption increases every year in autumn and winter but a further rise is expected due to repairs of flood damage. Another risk factor is damaged transport infrastructure which endangers supplies of fuel to power stations. However, CEPS says there is no imminent danger of serious problems in the power grid.
