Jananas: a breath of fresh air on the Czech folk music scene
Jananas is a hardcore folk band with a distinctly fresh style. It’s so
far only album released in 2010 received excellent reviews and got it a
nomination for the Czech “Grammy” award Andel. Following a short break
last year the band returned this spring with a tour called No More Tears. More
Folk rock vocalist Zuzana Michnová
Singer and songwriter Zuzana Michnová is one of the most distinct
vocalists of the Czech folk rock scene. For many years, she was part of the
legendary band Marsyas, and has also released an acclaimed solo album.
After a long break, the band recently made a comeback, and can again be
seen – and heard – in clubs across the country. More
Classical guitar player and chanson singer Lenka Filipová
This week’s Sunday Music Show profiles chanson singer, guitarist and
composer Lenka Filipová. The singer, who started out as a classical guitar
player and developed into a successful chanson singer has enchanted
audiences in Prague and Paris and recorded more than two dozen albums in a
career spanning more than 30 years. More
The Pelíšky soundtrack – a great Czechoslovak ‘60s primer
The 1999 movie Pelíšky (Cosy Dens) is a bittersweet drama set in the
period leading up the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia August 1968.
Chock-full of names like Václav Neckář, Blue Effect, Waldemar Matuška,
The Matadors, Hana Hegerová and Petr Novák, its soundtrack is an
excellent primer to the Czechoslovak music of that era and a brilliant
compilation by any standards. More

Rockers Schodiště mark 30 years on stage
The Prague-based rock band Schodiště, formerly known as Nahoru po
schodišti dolů band, this year marks 30 years on stage. Founded at the
height of the new wave, the band with its original sound and melancholic
lyrics, somewhat undermined by their irony and sarcasm, has evolved into a
steady fixture of the Czech rock scene. More
Dan Bárta – Vocalist whose solo work demonstrates jazz chops
Dan Bárta has performed with a host of Czech bands over the years,
including the rock groups Alice and J.A.R., and Sexy Dancers, who were more
in the funk field, while he has also appeared in musicals. But this
programme mainly concentrates on the singer’s jazzy “solo” work over
the last 13 years with Illustratosphere and the Robert Balzar Trio. More
Famous Czech jazz flutist Jiří Stivín
This week’s Sunday Music Show is devoted to one of the country’s most
prominent jazz artists –flutist Jiří Stivín. The 68-year-old musician,
who is reputed to be able to play on a blade of grass, says the feel for
jazz is something you are born with and some of the best renditions come
from children who are as yet unspoiled by the constraints of a music
education. More
Folk singer Jana Vébrová: the girl from the windmill
This week Radio Prague’s Sunday music show profiles Jana Vérova - a
young musician whose music is both raw and poetic and deeply rooted in her
place of birth –the former Sudetenland. Although she has recorded just
one album she regularly plays at festivals around the country and has a
strong following of devoted fans. More
