Two people have died and tens more are reported injured in a fire at
Eurostars David hotel in Prague. Fire crews from around Prague were called
to the fire on Saturday evening.
Forty people had to be evacuated from the building, seven are reported gravely injured, tens of others suffered lighter injuries.Two firemen were injured when the floor collapsed under them.
The rescue operation is expected to last for several more hours. The head of the resue team has not ruled out more casualties.
Social Democrat members critical of the party’s leadership met in Tabor
on Saturday to debate the situation within the party in the wake of its
election debacle in the last general elections and propose changes.
Close to 200 members have joined a new platform to "save the party" established by former regional governors Jiri Zimola and Michal Hasek. They are pushing for greater democracy in decision-making, arguing that all party members should elect a new leader at the party’s election conference in February and saying that all members should decide on whether the Social Democrats should join or support the new government.
Police in Lahore, Pakistan, say they have apprehended an accomplice of the
21-year-old Czech woman who was arrested at Lahore airport for smuggling
nine kilograms of heroin in her luggage.
According to Samaa TV the arrest was made during a raid in Lahore on the basis of information provided by the Czech national during interrogation. The suspect told interrogators that another man was also involved. Raids are being conducted to apprehend the third suspect who is still at large.
The young Czech, identified as Tereza Hluskova, could face a tough sentence for drugs smuggling. She claims she had no idea the parcel she was asked to take out of the country contained drugs.
2014 Olympic champion Eva Samkova began her dress rehearsal ahead of the 2018 Olympic Games by winning the world cup snowboard title in Eryurum, Turkey. National Geographic Society is preparing to launch a new app promoting historical sites on UNESCO’s list of cultural monuments. Among the royal residences on the list are the palace at Versailles, the royal Spanish palace at Aranjuez and Kroměříž chateau in Moravia where parts of Forman’s 1984 Oscar-winning film Amadeus were shot. The new app is to be launched in London at the end of January.
The rating agency Standard & Poor’s has affirmed the Czech
Republic’s AA- long-term foreign currency sovereign credit rating. The
outlook remains stable.
The sovereign credit rating evaluates a country's creditworthiness and its future ability to pay its obligations. It also serves as a measure of the country’s economic development and its institutional and political stability.
Sixth seed Karolina Plíšková beat fellow Czech Fed Cup team mate Lucie
Šafářová 7-6(6) 7-5 to move into the fourth round of the Australian
Open on Saturday.

The Czech Republic should reduce the numbers of its wild boar population by
90 percent in order to prevent the spread of the highly infectious African
swine fever, Agriculture Minister Jiri Milek said on Friday. He said the
wild boar population should be reduced across Europe for the measures
approved to be successful.
The Czech authorities have ordered a cull on wild boar in the affected area of the Zlin region and a ban has been issued on keeping domestic pigs. The country is expected to spend 200 million crowns this year on measures aimed at containing and eliminating the infectious disease.
The lower house of Parliament has voted to strip Prime Minister Andrej Babis of his parliamentary immunity, opening the way for prosecution. The motion was supported by 111 deputies, 69 deputies of the prime minister's ANO party voted against. Mr. Babis, who is suspected of EU subsidy fraud, has denied any wrongdoing. He told the lower house on Friday that the charges against him had been fabricated by the mafia and political opponents who wanted to remove him from politics. We live in a country where it is possible to commission criminal charges against someone and have them thrown in jail, the prime minister noted.
