Profile: Karel Hála
This week, the Czech music world mourned the death of one of its more
prominent stars, Karel Hála, who died aged 74 in the Czech capital,
Prague. Mr Hála was known as a singer of swing music, similar to the
rat-pack music sung by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Here’s
a clip from the song “Že prý někde padají ” or the more familiar
title “Pennies From Heaven.”

Jaromír Nohavica: Czech Republic’s most popular contemporary songwriter
Hello and welcome to this month’s edition of Music Profile. Today we are
going to look at the work of Jaromír Nohavica, one of the country’s most
respected singer songwriters. He released his first album Darmoděj in
1988. By that time, however, his songs were already well-known, as fans
circulated amateur recordings from his concerts. He now has numerous albums
to his name and sells-out concerts without having to put up a single
poster.

Support Lesbiens
The Czech band Support Lesbiens first got its start in the early 1990s,
introducing a hard, punkish sound often drawing comparisons with the then
popular Seattle scene and grunge music. The band was founded by a group of
young Czech musicians that included then-DJ Kryštof Michal a slight but
dynamic individual with a talent for vocals who soon became the most

Karel Gott
In this edition of Music Profile we take a brief look back at the long
career of the undisputed king of Czech pop music, Karel Gott. The
multi-million selling singer released his first single, a jazzy duet, in
1962. Just twelve months later Gott was voted Czechoslovakia's best singer;
by the end of the decade he had become an international star.
