Stone Bridge in Pisek Even though this year's August weather has been hot and sunny so far, things could not have been more different exactly two years ago, when many towns in the Czech Republic were affected by heavy floods. The waters didn't reach Prague until August 13, a couple of days after dozens of towns and villages in the south of the country had already found themselves under water. Stone bridge in the southern Bohemian town of Pisek On Tuesday the thirteenth century stone bridge in the southern Bohemian town of Pisek was reopened to pedestrians. The 111-metre long bridge is famous as the oldest remaining bridge in the Czech Republic, and for the statues of saints and the crucifixion of Christ which decorate it. However, during the disastrous floods in the Czech Republic last year, the bridge became known for something else as well: it was one of the most badly damaged cultural monuments in the country.  More

Medieval bridge in Pisek after floods, Photo:CTK The old town of Pisek, eighty kilometres south of Prague, was in the front line of last week's floods. Only as the mopping up operation begins has it become clear quite how much damage has been done. The town's best-known landmark, its medieval bridge, adorned with 18th century statues of saints, has taken a severe battering, and much of the town centre is recovering after coming under several metres of water. One of the many people who have been working as volunteers to help clear up the mess is Peter Moree, who teaches at Prague's Protestant Theological Faculty. Radio Prague's David Vaughan caught up with him and began by asking him about Pisek's ancient bridge.  More
