No landmark in Prague is more famous than the 14th century Charles Bridge,
which has undergone major renovation over the last two years - a project
that has come under unparalleled scrutiny and also criticism. On one side,
representatives of the city as well as the firm conducting the repairs say
the project is slowly but surely nearing successful completion; on the
other, activists - including a newly-founded civic association - say
critical mistakes were made, resulting in damages to the historic bridge.
One thing is certain: when it comes to the 230 million crown project,
emotions run high.

After months of criticism, Prague City Hall has admitted mistakes were made
in the reconstruction of Charles Bridge, one of the capital’s most
significant landmarks. City Hall has fined itself some 54,000 crowns (just
under 3,000 USD) for the shortcomings – a fine which has been branded by
some as ‘meaningless’ and ‘ridiculous’.

There is one place I like showing both Czechs and visitors who have been to
Prague several times, a place I myself learned about when recording a piece
about Kampa Island a few years ago. Right inside the doors of a hotel about
10 metres from Charles Bridge you can see part of its predecessor, the
Judith Bridge.

Charles Bridge, Prague’s most famous landmark, which last year celebrated
its 650th anniversary, has been undergoing a major reconstruction since
August. The Czech Culture Ministry’s heritage inspection team has now
come to a shocking conclusion: the ongoing repairs have done the bridge
more harm than good. The report, published on the ministry’s website,
claims that the reconstruction has allegedly harmed the aesthetic and
artistic value of the bridge.
