Three Czech football players scored their debut international goals in a
5:1 win over Canada on Saturday that showed the squad's strength in depth.

In football, leaders Ostrava were fortunate to come away from Sparta Prague
with a point on Saturday, after the most exciting league game seen in the
Czech Republic in some time. Several Czech players found the net in
various European leagues at the weekend, and coach Jaroslav Hrebik has
taken over at Dinamo Moscow. The Czech ice hockey team came second in the
Karjala Cup and the Velka Kunraticka cross country race was held for the
70th time, with one runner saying this was his last year after an
incredible 55 outings!

Czech tennis number one Jiri Novak reached the semi-final of the Paris
Masters, in what he describes as the second best season of his career. In
football, a record crowd at Banik Ostrava saw the league leaders go six
points clear of nearest rivals Sparta, who lost to bogey team Zlin, and
Czech internationals have been in the news around Europe. Czech ice hockey
league leaders Pardubice won their first game after five outings, and
legendary goaltender Dominik Hasek is going through a difficult period at
the moment.

It hasn't been a great week for Czech sport, with Roman Sebrle's silver in
the decathlon the only Czech medal so far at the World Athletics
Championships in Paris. In football, Sparta Prague have drawn Chelsea,
Lazio and Besiktas in the Champions League. Spare a thought, though, for
Slavia, who battled hard but could not turn around a 3:0 deficit in their
qualifier. And tenth seed Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek are the only Czech
tennis players left at the US Open after the fourth day's play.

Triple-jumper Sarka Kasparkova, who took gold at the 1997 World
Championships in Athens, has failed to make the final this time out.
Meanwhile Jaroslav Baba, 18, says he's happy to have reached the final in
Paris and Vera Pospisilova will be disappointed if she doesn't take home a
medal. Moravian teams Ostrava and Brno have surprised pundits by topping

Championships at Augsburg, Germany, with three golds, a silver and a
bronze. In swimming, Ilona Hlavackova has taken the first ever Czech medal
at the World Championships. The new Czech football season has begun, while
the two Czech teams in the Champions League qualifiers face tough opposition. And
police have recommended the state attorney file charges against ice hockey
goaltender Dominik Hasek for a brutal attack during an in-line hockey
game.
