One on OneMonika Koblerová – director of New York’s Czech Centre
One of my first ports of call on a recent visit to New York was the
city’s Czech Centre, which is at Madison Avenue and 83rd St in
Manhattan.
At least that’s where it’s located for the moment – later in the
year
it’s moving to the Bohemian National Hall, around 15 minutes walk away.
New York Czech Centre director Monika Koblerová talks about that move and
much more in this edition of One on One. More
Current AffairsCzech actors give public readings during Literature Night in Prague
This Thursday, 14 Czech actors will give public readings of international
works of literature at various places around Prague. The event is
organised by the Czech Centre in Prague, in cooperation with the Museum of
Czech Literature. What makes it unusual is that it will take place in the
evening - from 6pm to 11pm - in the form of a literature marathon. Dita

Current AffairsFirst Czech Centre in Asia opens in Tokyo
The network of Czech Centres, institutions promoting Czech culture abroad,
has once again expanded. A brand new Czech Centre has recently opened in
Japan's capital Tokyo, at the Czech Republic's Embassy. The Czech Republic
is known in Japan mainly for its classical music, successes in sport and in
recent years also for its animated film. The Czech Centre will now try to
bring more aspects of Czech culture to Japan.

Current AffairsCzech Centre opens in Prague
Czech Centres are to be found from New York to Moscow, promoting Czech
culture and providing a focus for local Czech communities. Now - perhaps
surprisingly - a Czech Centre is opening here in Prague, just metres from
the city's Estates Theatre. Jan Bondy is the director of Czech Centres. I
asked him why Prague needs one.

One on OneJaroslav Kanturek - director of the Czech Centre in Stockholm
Stockholm's Czech Embassy is located on a leafy street about fifteen
minutes walk from the centre of the Swedish capital. Behind the Embassy is
where you'll find the city's Czech Centre, a small but cosy building
divided into an information and reading room and a room used for meetings,
film projections and art exhibitions. The director is an amiable man
called Jaroslav Kanturek. When I called in on him recently, I asked Mr
Kanturek how long the Stockholm Centre had been there.

Current AffairsCzech Centres broaden their activities
Are you interested in classical or contemporary Czech music and art, or
would you like to enrol for a course of Czech? Well, you don't have to
travel all the way to the Czech Republic. In 15 countries of the world,
there are 18 Czech Centres, establishments similar to the British Council
or the French Institute, whose aim is to promote the Czech Republic
abroad. Their work focuses especially on culture, trade and tourism, and
each centre hosts events, such as film festivals, art exhibitions,
literature readings or trade presentations. For a symbolic price, they
also offer Czech-language courses.

Current AffairsLondon Czech Centre uses arts to present modern image of Czech Republic
The London Czech Centre is located on the busy Great Portland Street,
around five minutes walk from Oxford Circus. To escape from the noise at
street level, I spoke to the centre's young director Tomas Zykan in the
building's basement, and asked him just what it is that the Czech Centre
does.
