The city of Prague, as a popular tourist destination, attracts millions of
people thanks to its rich cultural heritage, historical monuments,
beautiful architecture and its romantic little streets and cafes. Although
it is known as one of the "greenest" capitals in Europe, few
people are aware that Prague includes some 4,900 hectares of forest land.
Around half the land is owned by the city, which spends some 36 million
crowns - 1.2 million Euros - a year on maintenance. For over a decade, it
has also owned ten run down gamekeepers' lodges but has only recently been
given the green light to renovate them and offer its rangers homes close
to their forests.

No matter how many centuries we have been living in a civilised society,
psychologists say that deep inside we are still hunters and gatherers. And
some remain that in the literal sense. In fact, the Czech Republic has a
whole army of hunters - around 140,000 and almost one hundred thousand of
them are registered with the Czech Hunters' Union - an organisation which
celebrates its 80th birthday this week.

a sharp fall in the country's hare population. Thousands of hares - as
well as rabbits - fled from the floods, which hit large parts of Bohemia
in August. And believe it or not the government is taking the matter
seriously: the agricultural ministry is to spend millions to make up the
