Investment to Prague. The visit comes amidst increasing economic
co-operation between Britain and the Czech Republic. Dominik Jun met Mr
Cahn whilst he was conducting a tour of the reconstruction of Charles
Bridge – itself a project contracted out to a British firm. He began by

ArtsNational Theatre set for extensive facelift
Prague’s National Theatre is one of the most important cultural
institutions in the Czech Republic. Located by the River Vltava at the end
of Narodni trida, the 19th century Neo-Renaissance building, with its
distinctive gilded cupola, is also one of the city’s most recognisable
landmarks. But today it is landmark in need of a facelift. Some work has
already begun on the roof, while the main reconstruction work on its
facades will get underway in around a year and a half’s time.

Current AffairsPrague's Astronomical Clock threatened by salt
The Orloj, or Astronomical clock, on the Old Town Square is one of Prague's
major tourist attractions. Every hour, the square fills with tourists who
watch two small windows on the clock tower, waiting for the regular
procession of apostles. Recently, however, the walls of the clock tower
have grown increasingly damp and conservationists fear that dust from the
moist plaster might cause mechanical problems for the ancient clockwork.

Current AffairsUNESCO recommendation gives hope to opponents of new skyscrapers
Experts from UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, meeting in New Zealand last
week, suggested Prague should reconsider the planned construction of
several new skyscrapers in the district of Pankrac. The Committee said
plans should respect the skyline of Prague's historic centre, which was
one of the main reasons Prague was included on UNESCO's list of World
Heritage Sites.

Prague's famous Charles Bridge celebrates its 650th anniversary on Sunday.
One of the oldest and certainly one of the most beautiful bridges in
Europe, this ancient artery across the Vltava river links Prague's Lesser
Town with the Old Town on the right bank and was vital to the development
of the Czech capital.

No one would question the cultural importance of Prague's Obecni Dum - the
city's historic Municipal House dating back to the early 20th century. The
famous Art Nouveau building was the site of the proclamation of the
Czechoslovak Republic in 1918 and was the site for meetings between
dissidents including Vaclav Havel and the outgoing communist leadership in
November 1989. As a site it is regularly enjoyed by the public for its
café, restaurant, exhibition spaces, and famous concert hall. Now, under a
new director, Obecni Dum should offer even more. More
