The latest film by Czech director and screenwriter Bohdan Slama,
"Stesti" or "Something Like Happiness" has just
premiered in Prague to high critical acclaim. Slama's previous feature
"The Wild Bees" ("Divoke vcely") received a number of
international awards, and according to reviewers, "Something Like
Happiness" stands a similar chance.

Czechoslovakia as well as other Central European countries had a large
Jewish community before the Second World War. Many of its Jewish citizens
perished in concentration camps and survivors had to face up to the
horrors of what they had been through. Many also felt a need to tell
others about what had happened in the death camps. This helped to
originate a lot of good films in post-war Czechoslovakia.

Current AffairsCottbus Film Festival focuses on Czech cinema
The eastern German city of Cottbus last week organized its 14th Film
Festival specializing on East European Cinema. Apart from the feature film
competition and a display of successful movies from countries of Central
and Eastern Europe, the festival annually focuses on cinematography of a
particular country. This year it was Czech cinema that had the chance to
present itself. My colleague Martin Mikule hopped across the border to
Germany for the last couple of days of the festival. He's now with me in

The creators of Up and Down are no to strangers to the film industry, in
fact they are very well known: the duo of director Jan Hrebejk &
screenwriter Petr Jarchovsky already have a good number of films behind
them. Internationally the most successful was probably - a tragicomic story about a family hiding a Jewish man

In today's papers U.S. Microsoft magnate Bill Gates' visit to Prague and
the Czech film Zelary's nomination for Best Foreign Language film at the
Academy awards vie for top story - with featuring a photo of
U.S. actress Sigourney Weaver and the chairman of the film academy Frank
Pierson announcing the nominees. Writes the paper Zelary will face off
against the Swedish drama "Evil", as well as a Japanese historic
film called "The Twilight Samurai", the Dutch film "Twin
Sisters", and French-Canadian satire "The Barbarian
Invasions", directed by well-known Quebec filmmaker Denys Arcand.
