Current AffairsFirst Czech Commissioner hopes to offer something specifically Czech to the EU
On Monday Pavel Telicka had his first day in his new job. He's the Czech
Republic's first ever European Commissioner, joining what is in effect the
government of the European Union. And on Wednesday he was officially
confirmed into office. On a mobile phone somewhere on the motorway between
Brussels and Strasbourg, David Vaughan caught up with Mr Telicka on the
eve of his officially taking up the post, and asked him whether he felt
nervous.

Current AffairsTelicka passes EP test with flying colours
This week the Czech Republic's candidate for a seat on the European
Commission in Brussels, Pavel Telicka, was put through one final grilling
before taking up the post. Mr Telicka was a last-minute choice for Czech
Commissioner, after embarrassment and confusion, when the government's
initial choice, the former Environment Minister, Milos Kuzvart, suddenly
and unexpectedly withdrew his candidacy a few weeks ago. In the end the
European Parliament's assessment of Mr Telicka's suitability for the post

because of two MPs that recently left the junior coalition Freedom Union.
The reason was that several coalition MPs were on foreign trips and the
opposition easily rejected the bill, Mlada Fronta Dnes explains.

One on OnePavel Telicka - Czech Republic's first European Commissioner
My guest in this week's One on One is Pavel Telicka, recently nominated as
the Czech Republic's first ever European Commissioner. Mr Telicka,
currently Czech Ambassador to the EU, certainly has the experience for the
job; he was the man who led the accession negotiations on behalf of the
Czech government. But his nomination follows an embarrassing few days for
the Czech Republic: he was only asked to do the job after the government's
first choice, former Environment Minister Milos Kuzvart, changed his mind
at the last minute, prompting the Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla to
collapse in parliament.

The situation in Haiti, where the UN Security Council authorized the
deployment of a multi national force, fills the front pages of all Czech
dailies. "The fall of a dictator", reads the lead headline in
today's Mlada Fronta Dnes reporting that Haiti today is a mixture of
euphoria and chaos. Closer to home, the situation in eastern Slovakia,
where the Roma minority has been looting shops in protest of lowered
social benefits, remains at the centre of attention.
