PanoramaPaseky nad Jizerou - a mountain village celebrates its violin-making tradition

11-08-2005 15:49 | David Vaughan

Paseky nad Jizerou This is the season of summer music festivals around the country, but the festival in the tiny mountain village of Paseky nad Jizerou is special. This is an isolated community of little wooden cottages, clinging to a hillside in the Krkonose Mountains up in the north of the Czech Republic. What makes this village special is an extraordinary musical tradition, going back nearly two centuries. The Paseky music festival, that takes place this weekend, builds on this tradition. To give you a taste of the festival, and the very special atmosphere of Paseky, here is David Vaughan, with a report he compiled when he visited last year's festival.  More

WitnessPavel Klimes - a return to a lost world

10-12-2003 | David Vaughan

Pavel Klimes lives in the village of Pec pod Snezkou in the Krkonose Mountains of North Bohemia. He runs a museum and information centre for the thousands of people who visit the mountains every year. Pavel is fascinated by the history of the region. Until World War Two the population was almost entirely German-speaking, and when they were expelled after the war, whole villages emptied overnight. Now Pavel is trying to put together some of the fragments of the lost history of the Krkonose Mountains, and part of this project is an attempt to restore some of the neglected wayside memorials, crosses and other architectural reminders of the region's past. Here he remembers an experience from a few years ago, when the project was just getting under way.  More

Mars, photo CTK There are a wide variety of stories making the headlines in Thursday's dailies, though most carry front page photos of Mars, which is at its closest to the earth for 60,000 years. Pravo and Lidove Noviny have what appears to be the same photo, except in Pravo Mars is orange coloured and in Lidove Noviny it's red. The face of athletics star Roman Sebrle is also splashed across the dailies, after he came second in the decathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Paris.  More
