necessary. Over the past few years, however, it’s undergone a
50-million-euro makeover at the hands of the Italian firm Grandi Stazioni.
On Thursday the presidents of Italy and the Czech Republic snipped the

Three years ago Prague’s main railway station Hlavní Nádraží was not
a nice place to be – poorly-maintained and dirty, it afforded travelers
little opportunity of refreshment. A major reconstruction launched in 2006
is radically transforming the premises which now afford modern terminals,
sales counters, boutiques and restaurants. Now the company Grandi Stazioni
which is conducting the reconstruction has gone a step further – offering
weary travelers some art as well.

Much of Prague’s main train station Praha Hlavní nádraží currently
resembles a building site, albeit one with thousands of commuters streaming
through it every day. A much needed and extensive renovation job should be
completed next year. Part of the platforms section has already been
reopened, and quite impressive it is too. It’s bright. There are
elevators.

first stage of a complete reconstruction, two glittering new shops have
opened in the station’s entrance hall. The developers are calling the
stores a first step in the hub’s transformation from a grotty and
