Current AffairsDesign solutions for the dark
All of us, at one time or another, have suffered the misery of
poorly-designed objects: the spill-proof bottle that leaks, the vase with
a poor centre of gravity, an inaccessible computer jack. If, however you
are
visually impaired or blind, even well-designed objects can be a misery. A
new exhibition, currently underway at the National Technical Museum - in
conjunction with the Prague City museum - addresses the problem of design
in everyday objects for the visually impaired. It presents new solutions
where there have often been few in the past. More
ArtsFrantisek Skala - a "midwife" of contemporary art
The Rudolfinum Gallery, one of the major Prague art halls, has prepared a
remarkable exhibition of modern Czech art featuring the work of one of the
country's most original visual artists: Frantisek Skala. His small,
discarded objects discovered in garbage dumps and transformed into new
artefacts create an interesting contradiction to the monumental space of
the historic building itself.

Current AffairsCountry's most popular water now available in bottle by designers of Ferrari cars
The most popular mineral water in the Czech Republic is Mattoni, which
comes from the west Bohemian spa town of Karlovy Vary. The water - usually

best known for sleek sports cars. Mattoni spokesman Michal Donath told me
all about it.

One on OneMaxim Velcovsky - a young Czech artist with a European perspective
Maxim Velcovsky is one of the Czech Republic's leading young artists. Most

among his best known pieces are a vase in the shape of a Wellington boot
and a porcelain version of a typical water-cooler paper cup. He is also
known for a huge fibreglass crucifix, which stands in a Protestant church
in Hradec Kralove. I spoke to Maxim Velcovksy at an exhibition of his at
Prague's Galerie Kritiku, and began by asking him to explain the thinking
behind his work.

Current AffairsLondon Czech Centre uses arts to present modern image of Czech Republic
The London Czech Centre is located on the busy Great Portland Street,
around five minutes walk from Oxford Circus. To escape from the noise at
street level, I spoke to the centre's young director Tomas Zykan in the
building's basement, and asked him just what it is that the Czech Centre
does.
