Virgin - or primeval - forests are rare in this part of the world where
logging and tourism have taxed Nature to a considerable extent. Now there
are efforts to try and restore Nature's bounty for future generations. In
addition to protecting existing nature reserves Czech environmentalists
are trying to create new ones. If all goes well in several hundred years'
time there should be new primeval forests in the north and eastern parts
of the country.

Talking PointWhy were Czechs gasping for fresh air?
Imagine waking up to a day when the city's covered with smog, there is no
sunlight and you cannot breathe, the air is heavy and there's nowhere to
escape to. A day goes by, and then another and another...In the 1980s,
many residents of the north Bohemian and Moravian industrial zones were
used to such conditions. Doctors advised them to take in large amounts of
Vitamin C, stay indoors, keep all windows closed, and avoid any strenuous
sport. Then, the Communist regime fell, numerous factories and mines
closed down, power plants were cleaned up, and residents were able to
breathe cleaner air. Until last week when it appeared that it was back to
the old days...

Current AffairsInversion and smog have Czechs gasping for fresh air
Unusually high levels of smog forced many residents in industrial regions
and bigger towns and cities to stay indoors for several days last week. In
the Moravian town of Karvina, for example, dust levels were ten times
higher than usual. The elderly, children, and people with asthma or other
health problems had breathing difficulties. Many who could, escaped to the
country.

Every year, almost a million Christmas trees are sold in the Czech
Republic. Soon after the holidays people throw them away and the trees
have to be disposed of as waste. For the sixth year running,
environmentalists in Brno are offering people the chance to buy live
Christmas trees which can be replanted outdoors after Christmas. Also,
they've chosen one particular type of conifer, once plentiful in the Czech
lands but now on the verge of extinction.

It has been sixty years since the end of the Second World War but it was
not until last Sunday that the northern Czech industrial town of Usti nad
Labem unveiled a memorial dedicated to the 1,000 Jewish residents who
perished in the Holocaust. It is one of the most striking memorials in
Europe - a massive granite Star of David half immersed into the site of a
former Jewish cemetery. It is simple but powerful.

The Czech national anthem describes the Czech Republic as paradise on
earth, boasting waters murmuring through its meadows and forests rustling
over rocky hills. Well, it looks like the country is delivering on its
promises - in just forty years the area covered by forests has increased
by 50,000 hectares.
