Current AffairsInternet newsletter offers Czech-American news, hard-to-find products
Numerous newspapers and magazines serve the Czech community in the United
States, from "nationwide" publications such as Americke listy to
regional titles like Czech Nebraska. There are also several internet
websites and email newsletters, such as the weekly Dumpling News; it is
produced by Zora Pergl, a woman of Czech descent based in Florida. I asked
her how Dumpling News has been received since its launch in April last
year.

Current AffairsCzech Republic asks ex-pats in US to help abolish visas for Czechs
This week hundreds of thousands of Czech Americans will open envelopes from
the Czech Embassy in Washington asking them to join a campaign to abolish
US visas for Czech citizens. For years the Czech Republic has striven to
be included in the US waiver programme, which would put relations on an
equal footing, but so far in vain. Now it is asking Czech ex-pats in the
United States to bring the matter to the attention of their congressmen.
Jakub Skalinik of the Czech Foreign Ministry explains what the campaign

Current AffairsCzechs abroad call for introduction of postal vote; turnout expected low at embassies
According to estimates, some two million people of Czech extraction live
outside the Czech Republic. Some 300,000 out of those have Czech
citizenship and are therefore entitled to elect deputies to the lower

abroad had their first chance to vote in the previous election four years
ago after a law had been passed to that effect. But fewer than 4,000 of
them turned up to cast their ballots at the Czech Republic's embassies and
consulates around the world. Expectations are similar this time around.

Czechs TodayCharlotta Kotik: an exceptional Czech New Yorker
In Czechs Today I am delighted to introduce Charlotta Kotik, the Curator of
Contemporary Art at the world-renowned Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York
City. Energetic and quick on her feet, she encouraged me to stay for a
meeting she had with an artist to discuss a future project. A painter
showed sketches of iconic figures, such as Vincent Van Gogh, interpreted
by an autistic student he works with. Their conversation was just the
beginning of creating a future exhibit.
