The Czech Finance Minister Bohuslav Sobotka The Czech National Bank has called on the government to step up its efforts in cutting the country's growing debt to avoid future crisis. The government has once again postponed a final decision on a new bill on property declarations. The Finance Ministry expects the 2004 budget gap to drop below 6 percent of GDP. The Prague Stock Exchange is to experience the first IPO since it was established 14 years ago. A government commission has recommended 25 projects for the post-war reconstruction of Iraq. The Czech National Bank has reported an increased number of counterfeit US dollars in the Czech Republic. The state sector will lay off thousands of staff this year. Czech Railways are also planning mass redundancies. The number of self-employed people has been falling since the beginning of this year. Czech building societies have reported a steep decline in new contracts in the first quarter. Czech breweries have reported record high exports in 2003.  More

Vit Pohanka at Prague airport with his mother, photo: CTK There were scenes of great joy at Prague airport early on Sunday morning when three Czech journalists kidnapped last week in Iraq were reunited with their families. The three - Czech Radio's Vit Pohanka, and Michal Kubal and Petr Klima of Czech Television - had been abducted by a group of Iraqi insurgents the previous Sunday, before being released on Friday after intense diplomatic negotiations. The news that they had been freed was greeted with great relief in the Czech Republic: many had feared the worst for the three journalists. More
