Finland made international headlines recently with news that its government
plans to completely eradicate smoking – not just a ban on smoking in
public places, that already exists, but the total and final eradication of
smoking amongst the Finnish population. It’s a lofty goal to be sure, and
has reignited the smoking debate in other European countries, many of which
have banned smoking in cafes, pubs and restaurants. The Czech Republic,
however, like most former communist states, seems to be trailing behind.

A newly-released study on substance abuse among young people in Europe
makes alarming reading for Czech officials. The results of the European
School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs (ESPAD) carried out in 35
European countries in 2007 have just been released, and they show Czech
teenagers topping many of the tables in terms of abuse of controlled
substances such as alcohol, nicotine and drugs.
