Prague Zoo recently launched a new project to raise money for the protection of gorillas in Africa. It is raising money by collecting old mobile phones from visitors and selling them to a recycling company. The profit will be used for a UNESCO-listed gorilla-breeding reserve in the western African state of Cameroon.  More

There are only a handful of Czech humanitarian aid workers in Haiti; on Monday it emerged that one of them had been kidnapped last week and held for seven days. The aid organisation in question, the French-based Doctors without Borders, has said that one Czech and one Belgian worker were safely returned on Sunday, but has so far declined to shed more light on their six-day ordeal, which is bound to change the way aid agencies work in the earthquake-stricken country.  More

Anthropologist and historian Markéta Křížová is the author of the only history of Haiti in Czech, and has been following recent events there keenly. This week we discussed the situation in the country and the outlook for the future. But first I asked Křížová how often she had been to Haiti when preparing her book.  More

Photo: CTK Over two weeks after Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake, the situation in the country remains one of the world’s biggest news stories, with aid organisations and soldiers struggling to distribute food, water and medical care to many hundreds of thousands of people who have been left homeless. Czech Radio journalist Pavel Polák arrived in Haiti four days after the earthquake and reported on the situation there for over a week. After his return to Prague, I spoke to Polák about his experiences.  More
