Current AffairsArmy evacuates Czechs from Japan
Two army aircraft left Prague for Japan on Tuesday evening to bring back
selected Czechs, Poles and Slovaks, primarily women and children, from the
disaster-stricken main island of Honshu. Among the evacuees are roughly
half of the members of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, which was supposed
to be touring the country for another week after the earthquake struck.
Just over a hundred people have been evacuated, with a promise of more army
flights if the situation requires. More

The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, under new management after years of
discord, has appointed the world-class conductor and native Czech Jiří
Bělohlávek to be its chief conductor when the current maestro, Eliahu
Inbal, steps down in 2012. The choice has been widely applauded, with Mr
Bělohlávek seen as just the thing to bring the national philharmonic into
the future and out into the world. Earlier I spoke by phone with Jaroslav
Pondělíček of the orchestra’s artistic board, who told me how Jiří
Bělohlávek could succeed where others could not. More

The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra will soon be under new management:
specifically that of David Mareček, who the Ministry of Culture appointed
to lead the orchestra on Monday. It is hoped that the youthful director of
the Brno Philharmonic will bring new vigour to the post and especially an
end to years of disputes between the orchestra and its management.
