For this week’s programme we interrupt our chronological journey through
the Czech Radio archives, and go back as far as 1912. Throughout this summer
in Prague it has been hard not to notice posters depicting the Titanic as
the great liner sank on the night from April 14-15 1912. They are
advertising an exhibition of artifacts from the ship currently on show in
the Czech capital. One member of the crew who survived was a young Czech
waiter, Rudolf Linhart. He had been working in a London hotel in the years
before the First World War and at the beginning of 1912 his dream came true
when he was taken on by the White Star Line to work as a waiter for the
maiden voyage of the greatest ship on earth. In an interview for
Czechoslovak Radio fifty years later, he remembered the traumatic
experience of that fateful night in April. More

More than 200 masterpieces of Czech avant-garde and modern art fetched
record prices at a Sotheby’s auction in London on Monday.
František Kupka’s early abstract Movement, created between 1913 and
1919, sold for 1.3 million pounds, the highest sum ever paid for a Czech
artwork. Monday’s auction brought 11.1 million pounds, more than double
then Sotheby’s estimated. Other significant works sold at the auction
included Josef Čapek’s Sailor and Phantomas and Sculptress in the Studio
by Emil Filla. Jan Richter spoke about the action with Czech Radio’s

Current AffairsCzech officials buy rare 15th century miniature at Sotheby’s auction
Officials from the Central Bohemian region bought a rare 15th century
miniature at auction at Sotheby’s in London on Tuesday. The artwork,
depicting silver mining in the Bohemia town of Kutná Hora, eventually went
for over half a million pounds sterling, and is set to be the most
important piece at a newly established gallery there.
