Radek Stepanek, photo: CTK The Czech Republic have been beaten 3:2 by Spain in the first round of this season's Davis Cup, after Czech number one Jiri Novak suffered a groin strain. Czech ice hockey coach Slavomir Lener says he was pleased with how his team played at the Swedish Games, the last tournament before May's World Championships. Cross country skier Katerina Neumannova has won yet another World Cup event, this time the 10 kilometre free in the French Alps. Athlete Roman Sebrle has started the season in style and Czech footballers made their mark in Europe at the weekend.  More

Martina Navratilova, photo: CTK Martina Navratilova's last ever match at tennis's Australian Open ended in defeat in the mixed doubles final on Sunday. Another Czech sporting great, ice hockey forward Jaromir Jagr, played his 1,000th NHL game on Friday, though the game could have gone better for the famous no. 68. In football, Jiri Stajner has joined Sparta Prague on loan from Hanover, while other Czech players had mixed fortunes as the Bundesliga started again.  More

Ante Jazic, Jan Koller, Libor Sionko and Richard Hastings, photo: CTK Three Czech football players scored their debut international goals in a 5:1 win over Canada on Saturday that showed the squad's strength in depth. Meanwhile, the country's Under 21s - the reigning European champions - are in a good position to reach their Euro 2004, after beating Switzerland away in the first leg of play-offs. Decathlete Roman Sebrle has once again been named Czech Athlete of the Year, and 17-year-old Jakub Sindel has broken Jaromir Jagr's record to become the youngest player to ever score a hat trick in the domestic ice hockey league.  More

Roman Sebrle, photo: CTK It hasn't been a great week for Czech sport, with Roman Sebrle's silver in the decathlon the only Czech medal so far at the World Athletics Championships in Paris. In football, Sparta Prague have drawn Chelsea, Lazio and Besiktas in the Champions League. Spare a thought, though, for Slavia, who battled hard but could not turn around a 3:0 deficit in their qualifier. And tenth seed Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek are the only Czech tennis players left at the US Open after the fourth day's play.  More

In swimming, Ilona Hlavackova has taken the first ever Czech medal at the World Championships. The new Czech football season has begun, while the two Czech teams in the Champions League qualifiers face tough opposition. And police have recommended the state attorney file charges against ice hockey goaltender Dominik Hasek for a brutal attack during an in-line hockey game.  More

Leading Czech athlete Roman Sebrle has taken part in an unusual event - a complete decathlon not over the regular two days but in just 100 minutes! The Czech Republic's men's volleyball team have something to celebrate after reaching the sport's World League finals in Madrid next month. And in tennis news, Jiri Novak's coach says the Czech no. 1 may retire next year and Martina Narvratilova has made a call for smaller tennis rackets.  More

Former ice hockey megastar Dominik Hasek has been banned from in-line hockey for a year for attacking an opponent. The Czech football team which reached the final of Euro 96 have reunited for an exhibition match in Prague and goalkeeper Petr Cech could fulfil a childhood dream by signing with Spanish giant Barcelona.  More
