Current Affairs"Most Beautiful Books" collection to represent the Czech Republic at book fairs
The Cultural Ministry and the Museum of Czech Writing have just presented
awards for the "Most Beautiful Books" of 2003. This "beauty
contest" has a tradition of almost forty years. The committee
evaluates the visual quality and the quality of graphics and printing of
recently published books. The prize therefore does not go to authors but
to publishers.

For the last few weeks it might have seemed that the Czech world of arts
revolved almost exclusively around books. Well this time again, this
programme focuses on two events related to books and literature - as they
simply dominate the arts scene in the coming days. On Thursday, the ninth
Prague book fair, Bookworld 2003 got underway at the Prague Exhibition
Grounds. While it was "water, water everywhere" during last
August's floods, now the Art Nouveau exhibition palace is for four days
flooded with books.

Czechs TodayViktor Janis - a translator on the watch
Viktor Janis is a young and successful literary translator. Among his translations are works by such renowned authors as Graham Greene, Isaac Asimov, Iain Banks, Hanif Kureishi, Tom Clancy or Louis de Bernieres. Viktor has already gained recognition for his work in literary translation but that is not the only way in which he contributes to the overall quality of Czech translation. In this week's edition of Profile Pavla Horakova spoke to Viktor Janis after she visited one rather unusual award ceremony at the annual Book Fair.
