Talking PointDo future Czech MEPs need good language skills?
In a month's time Czechs will go to the polls to elect their first ever
European MPs. The election campaign is in full swing and the parties are
trying to appeal to voters in various ways. One of the parties has put up
billboards mocking the poor ability of the ruling Social Democrats to
communicate in foreign languages in EU institutions. They are hinting at
the scandal that was caused by the sudden resignation of the government's
original candidate for EU commissioner Milos Kuzvart. Rumour had it that
it was his poor knowledge of English that made him step down.

Current AffairsYou don't have to be Czech to vote in the Czech European elections - but you'll have to hurry if you want to register...
For the first time ever, foreigners will be able to vote in a Czech

initial choice, the former Environment Minister, Milos Kuzvart, suddenly
and unexpectedly withdrew his candidacy a few weeks ago. In the end the
European Parliament's assessment of Mr Telicka's suitability for the post
went fairly smoothly, but there were also a few bumps.

Countdown to EuropeEuropean accession: will Czechs "lose" their sovereignty?
European Union accession is now coming up fast - after a ten year accession
process just weeks remain before the Czech Republic and nine other
candidate countries become members. That's not to say so-called
euro-sceptics have disappeared - quite the contrary. With the EU draft
constitution far from ratified, and promises like the free movement of
labour put for the most part on hold for now - at least for the Czechs -
euro-sceptics here may feel they have been vindicated - that their
warnings were correct. Jan Velinger spoke recently with economist Petr
Mach, the head of the Czech Centre for Economics & Politics, asking him
about his feelings on accession and what he thought Czechs would
"lose" by having joined the European Union.
