Photo: European Commission In a month's time Czechs will go to the polls to elect their first ever European MPs. The election campaign is in full swing and the parties are trying to appeal to voters in various ways. One of the parties has put up billboards mocking the poor ability of the ruling Social Democrats to communicate in foreign languages in EU institutions. They are hinting at the scandal that was caused by the sudden resignation of the government's original candidate for EU commissioner Milos Kuzvart. Rumour had it that it was his poor knowledge of English that made him step down.  More

David Vaughan with a letter confirming that he has been added to the electoral roll For the first time ever, foreigners will be able to vote in a Czech election. When Czechs go to the polls in their first elections to the European Parliament in a few weeks' time, citizens from other EU countries will also be able to vote for Czech candidates - a strange thought just 14 years after the fall of communism. Pavel Telicka, photo: CTK This week the Czech Republic's candidate for a seat on the European Commission in Brussels, Pavel Telicka, was put through one final grilling before taking up the post. Mr Telicka was a last-minute choice for Czech Commissioner, after embarrassment and confusion, when the government's initial choice, the former Environment Minister, Milos Kuzvart, suddenly and unexpectedly withdrew his candidacy a few weeks ago. In the end the European Parliament's assessment of Mr Telicka's suitability for the post went fairly smoothly, but there were also a few bumps.  More

European Parliament, photo: European Commission European Union accession is now coming up fast - after a ten year accession process just weeks remain before the Czech Republic and nine other candidate countries become members. That's not to say so-called euro-sceptics have disappeared - quite the contrary. With the EU draft constitution far from ratified, and promises like the free movement of labour put for the most part on hold for now - at least for the Czechs - euro-sceptics here may feel they have been vindicated - that their warnings were correct. Jan Velinger spoke recently with economist Petr Mach, the head of the Czech Centre for Economics & Politics, asking him about his feelings on accession and what he thought Czechs would "lose" by having joined the European Union.  More
