European Parliament The implications of the Czech Republic's accession to the European Union are the centre of attention in most of today's newspapers. Mlada Fronta Dnes speculates that the elections to the European Parliament might bring down the government of Vladimir Spidla. The paper says that the outcome of the June elections will be a significant event on the domestic political scene and will have a bearing on the survival of the ruling coalition.  More

All the papers lead with stories as varying as former environment minister Milos Kuzvart's appointment as the Czech Republic's first commissioner to the European Union, the government's failure to begin discussion on a bill on same-sex marriages, and a potential crisis in the cabinet over rising rents. We begin, however, with the daily Mlada Fronta Dnes, where the lead headline declares "Czechs are losing the opportunity to work in Europe".  More

Current AffairsEU arrest warrant likely to provoke heated debate

05-02-2004 | Coilin O'Connor

The Czech parliament is preparing for a heated debate on the adoption of a European arrest warrant in this country. The measure is intended to help counteract terrorism and organised crime, and is also necessary for EU membership. Nevertheless, because the implementation of a European arrest warrant requires countries to change their own national legislation, some people fear that it will lead to a loss of sovereignty.  More

Viktor Kozeny, photo: CTK These days almost everyone in public life has a webpage - and even highly controversial businessman Viktor Kozeny - the so-called Pirate of Prague - has proven no exception. Last week the former Czech turned Irish citizen and Bahamas resident launched a new webpage to help garner Czech support for what he claims will be his run for European Parliament in elections in June. But can a man who is wanted by Czech authorities on charges of cheating investors out of billions really believe he can count on Czech support? The idea seems dubious at best...  More

Bill Gates, photo: CTK The arrival of Bill Gates in Prague, the Golden Globe Awards and the salaries of Czech deputies to the European Parliament - those are the main stories on today's front pages. Photo: www.army.cz Czech troops have served in hot spots around the world before - taking part in missions from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, to Bosnia, and of course post-Saddam Iraq. In the past, such missions have involved peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, and monitoring and prevention against the use of weapons of mass destruction, operations that met with high degrees of success. Now, following a government decision to meet NATO and U.S. requests for help, Czech soldiers may embark on a new mission once again, this time in Afghanistan. Not only to keep the peace, but to operate - for the first time - on the country's 'front lines'.  More

Vaclav Havel, photo: CTK There are a variety of stories on Wednesday's front pages, though both PRAVO and MLADA FRONTA DNES lead with Vaclav Havel's early return from Asia. The former president was due to spend three weeks there, but had to abandon the trip after just three days due to breathing problems. Another name in the news is Czech cross-country skier Katerina Neumannova: several papers carry photos of Ms Neumannova, who on Tuesday won her second World Cup race in a row, just six months after having a baby.  More

Mars, photo: CTK The tragic Egyptian charter plane crash that left 148 dead and panoramic colour images of Mars released by NASA after establishing contact with a US probe to search for signs of life on the Red Planet make the front pages of almost all the main dailies today. Domestically, it's a photo of Czech actress Helena Ruzickova that dominates the papers. Mrs Ruzickova died on Sunday at the age of 67 after losing a two-year battle against cancer.  More
