The west Bohemian city of Plzen celebrated 175 years since the birth of its
famous Pilsner brew at the weekend.
On October 5, 1842 beer master Josef Groll made the first Pilsner beer, the world’s first-ever pilsner type blond lager, which inspired much of the beer produced in the world today, many of which are named Pils, Pilsner and Pilsener. He used hops from Žatec, soft water and his own malt. The recipe has not changed over the years.
Open air celebrations with Pilsner beer, good food and music took place on the main square on Saturday.

A three-month transition period following the introduction of a smoking ban
in Czech restaurants and pubs has come to an end. From Wednesday operators
may be fined up to CZK 50,000 if inspectors find lit cigarettes on their
premises. The ban came into effect on May 31.
The Czech Ministry of Health is preparing to launch an information campaign in the coming months to clarify the legislation. A particular issue is the interpretation of the ban with regard to hostelries’ outdoor covered areas and beer gardens.

For the first time in 10 years, sales of beer-on-tap in the Czech Republic stopped falling in 2016. Year-on-year, they increased by a little less than one percentage point, the daily Hospodářské noviny reported on Tuesday. At the same time, people still prefer consuming beer bought in stores, Martina Ferencová of the Beer and Malt Asociation told the daily. According to a report by AC Nielsen, retail sales for beer in the Czech Republic reached 16.4 billion crowns from June 2016 to May 2017. Year-on-year, it was a one-percent increase.
