Sentences were handed down on Monday in what has been described as one of
the biggest cases of organised crime in the Czech Republic, that of the
so-called Berdych gang, an infamous criminal grouping named after alleged
ringleader David Berdych. On Monday nineteen members of the gang,
including former police officers, were given a total of 118 years in
prison for crimes including, kidnapping, armed robbery and criminal

Otakar Motejl, the Czech Republic's ombudsman or public defender of rights,
was elected for a second term of office on Tuesday, and will hold the post
for the next six years. Mr Motejl is the country's first ombudsman - the
office has only existed since 2000 - and going by its high approval
ratings Czechs seem to think he's doing a good job.

The Constitutional Court on Tuesday set an important precedent when it
invalidated President Klaus' decision to sack Iva Brozova as head of the
Supreme Court in February of this year. The judge ruled that in dismissing
Brozova the president had violated the independence of the judiciary. The
president in turn accused the judiciary of wanting to usurp political
power.

The Czech Republic suffered another loss on Monday in its highly-publicised
dispute with the Japanese investment group Nomura. The group is suing the
Czech state for failing to protect its investment in the bank IPB, which
was placed under forced administration and sold off in 2000.
