Today's Czech dailies all take note of the latest tragedy in Iraq - 18
Italian soldiers killed in the town of Nasiriya when a bomb went off: a
soldier hangs his head at the devastation on the cover of HOSPODARSKE
NOVINY while the headline proclaims "Americans look for a way to get
out of Iraq". Meanwhile, other stories making the front pages include
the US ambassador's role in lobbying for American F-16s for Prague, and a
legal case involving the interior minister and the weekly Respekt.

The vote of confidence in the government and discussion on its public
finance reform plan in the lower house of parliament this week are
dominating most papers today. All the dailies speculate on the chances of
the opposition Civic Democrats winning a no-vote of confidence and
bringing down the three-party coalition government. Internationally, it's
Monday's terrorist attack on the UN headquarters in Iraq as well as NATO's
new secretary general that make the front pages.

One on OneDirk Bachmann - UNICEF goodwill ambassador seeing world by motorbike
Dirk Bachmann has a rather unusual way of spending his time - riding around
the world on his motorbike raising awareness of the United Nations
Children's Fund (UNICEF). Several years ago, Dirk emigrated from his
native Germany to New Zealand, where he works as a language teacher. But
his work as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF - and in particular the
campaign to eradicate polio - has taken him around the globe. He recently
made a brief pit stop in the Czech Republic, and had time to drop into
Radio Prague.

Today's papers offer a broad selection of cover stories, ranging from
recent developments in Iraq to a new study that reveals that almost 40
percent of Czechs use bribes to get what they need from bureaucrats,
doctors, police, and judges, to name but a few. notes
that some 40 billion crowns in cash or goods are secretly given in bribes
each year, and writers that a quarter of the Czech population thinks
bribes are perfectly normal. Not a pretty picture.

MagazineToll free help line for children kept busy all year round
Some time ago the UN Committee for Children's Rights published its annual
report on the Czech Republic. The report was generally positive although
the committee's inspection team found some areas that require attention:
improving the state of the environment which has an adverse affect on
children's health, especially in terms of rising asthma and allergies,
bringing back the institution of school doctors and dentists - or at least
ensuring compulsory medical check ups for children, and taking measures to
curb the high incidence of accidents involving children - which is liked
to the high mortality on Czech roads in general. Judging by the UN report
it would appear that as far as physical and psychological child abuse is
concerned the Czech Republic is in a similar position to other European
states. But what position is that ? In order to find out something more
specific about the situation I called Mrs. Jarmila Knight who works for a
toll free child help line and speaks with abused children every day.
