The great Czech illustrator and animator Zdeněk Miler – creator of the
famous Krtek or Krteček (Little Mole) enjoyed by children and parents
worldwide – turned 90 years old this week. On the occasion of Mr
Miler’s birthday (incidentally his famous character is now 55) the
Vltavín Gallery in Prague opened a new exhibition honouring his work.
Called Zdeněk Miler dětem, the show above all is for children and
features drawings, watercolours and original paintings on transparencies
(called cells) which were used in the animation process to bring the Mole
and friends to life. More

This year’s nominations for the Czech Lions – the awards given annually
by the Czech Film and Television Academy – offered a big surprise, when a
little-noticed film called Pouta (Walking Too Fast) walked away with 13
nominations in only 12 categories, a record for the Lions. Whether it will
lose in the end to bigger-budget and more conventionally made films will be
interesting to see, but for now the nominations themselves mean a serious

business news channel Z1 abruptly ended its broadcasts Monday. The
station’s owner, the J&T finance group, said the move was forced by

the state-run 24-hour news channel, ČT 24, shuts down with a loss of

Current AffairsNew drama-doc on Nicholas Winton story premieres in Prague
A new drama-documentary premiered in Prague on Thursday evening about the
incredible story of Nicholas Winton. Called ‘Nicky’s Family’, the
film retells the story of the British man who saved hundreds of Jewish
children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939. Winton was later
knighted for his efforts, and Sir Nicholas, now 101, was in Prague once
again to attend the premiere. More
