SpotlightJilemnice - the cradle of Czech skiing
It is early on a Friday morning, the air is freezing and there is no sign
of the sun in the sky. Yet, the creaky old Karosa bus heading towards
Krkonoše or Giant Mountains is almost full when I arrive at the bus
station. Many people from Prague have taken their day off in order to enjoy
some snow. Unlike most of my fellow travellers, I am not heading towards
the ski slopes and racing tracks. My destination is the little town of
Jilemnice, crouching at the foothills of the Giant Mountains in north
Bohemia. Jilemnice was one of the very first skiing centres in the country
and it proudly calls itself the Cradle of Czech skiing. Petra Pohůnkova
from the local Town Hall has promised to give me a tour through the town.
We meet on the central square, right in front of the Town Hall building: More
One on OneRobin Kaleta – Freeride skier on majesty and danger of Alaska’s peaks
Earlier this month four professional Czech skiers set out for the trip of a
lifetime: skiing some of the steepest peaks in the world in Thompson Pass,
Alaska. The team included former world skicross champion Tomáš Kraus,
Olympian snowboarder Michal Novotný, snowboarder Martin Černík, and
freeride skier Robin Kaleta. For seven days or so the four tackled some of
the toughest faces in the area for a short documentary. More
PanoramaCzech champion Tomáš Kraus on ski cross, Alaska and the Olympics
Freestyle skier Tomáš Kraus is one of the Czech Republic’s best
athletes, specialising in the discipline of ski cross, which was featured
for the first time this year at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. In the
discipline, four skiers race each other to get to the bottom of courses
full of banks and jumps, with the first two advancing to the next round.
With the excitement of close jostling for position and sharp turns, it’s
no surprise that the sport is quickly becoming one of skiing’s most
thrilling.

Current AffairsCzech ski cross champion, fellow athletes, set sights on Alaska
The professional ski season has drawn to a close but four Czech athletes,
including the Czech ski cross champion Tomáš Kraus, aren’t ready to
pull out the golf clubs just yet. In a day’s time, he and a well-known
freeride skier and two of the country’s best snowboarders will head to
Alaska, where they plan to tackle extreme inclines and pristine powder over
the course of 12 days. The result should be a short documentary about
skiing or snowboarding at its very best.
