Czech animation has a very long and rich history in the Czech Republic, but
in the view of some young filmmakers it’s gotten behind the times.
That’s why the studio Bohemian Multimedia has organised the Anomalia
workshop, a two-month course in modern animation that has brought some of
the best minds in the field – namely artists from the famed American
studio Pixar – to the east Bohemian town of Litomyšl to share their
knowledge with students from Central Europe and even other professional
Czech animators. This afternoon we spoke with organiser David Toušek, who
is currently at Litomyšl Chateau and told us more about the programme.

In the first two weeks of its showing, the new Czech film Kajínek has
shattered all of the country’s previous box office records. The ambitious
home-grown take on the crime thriller genre, based on the story of
convicted contract killer Jiří Kajínek, received massive promotion but
its popularity has also been fuelled by persisting doubts about
Kajínek’s guilt.

thriller Kajínek, partly based on events surrounding one of the Czech
Republic’s most notorious convicts. Found guilty of two contract killings

behind bars had it not been for a daring escape from the country’s
toughest prison he has also always maintained he was innocent.

Current Affairs‘Kajínek’ – gripping story of convicted killer who maintains his innocence
A new film hits the cinema screens next week about the Czech Republic’s
most notorious prisoner - Jiří Kajínek. In 1998, Kajínek was sentenced
to life in prison for the gangland killings of a Plzeň businessman and one
of his bodyguards, a crime he’s always denied committing. His daring
escapes from several of the country’s high security prisons – and
persistent doubts about the conviction – have made him something of a
popular hero among Czechs.

Current AffairsSummer Film Festival begins in Uherské Hradiště
The annual Summer Film School festival begins on Friday in the Moravian
town of Uherské Hradiště. The largest non-competition movie festival in
the country has a lot in store for the 3,300 visitors already accredited,
namely an astounding array of films, but also special workshops with this
year’s star guests, who include British director Ken Loach, and much to
do outside the cinema. Earlier today, our reporter Christian Falvey asked
the festival’s programme director Jan Jílek how the atmosphere was on
the first day.

PanoramaOral history project builds up picture of Brno cinema experience
Prague last week hosted the 16th International Oral History Conference. And
among the dozens of seminars, workshops and presentations, there was one
about an ongoing project to interview cinemagoers and movie house workers
in the country’s second city, Brno. The idea is to produce a picture of
the cinema experience in the city over four decades. In this week’s
Panorama, we look at some of the results so far.

Children of Stalinism is the title of a series of documentary films about
the often harrowing experiences of daughters of political prisoners in
1950s Czechoslovakia. It has just been announced that four of those films
