2011 marks one hundred years since Jan Kašpar, a Czech aviation pioneer,
made the first long-distance flight from a town in East Bohemia, to the
famous Chuchle racetrack near Prague. Kašpar covered the 120 kilometres in
a retrofitted single-engine monoplane, bought from Louis Bleriot after the
Frenchman’s successful flight over the English Channel. Kašpar’s own
journey from Pardubice to Chuchle was itself ambitious and when he arrived
he was given a heroes’ welcome. This week, in honour of the original
deed, the feat was repeated by another Czech pilot, Petr Mára. Radio

celebrate: on Wednesday the firm – which specialises in two-seat aircraft
– rolled out its first larger passenger plane in 40 years. The sleek EV
55 Outback, is designed for extreme conditions (hence the name) and is
expected to go into commercial production in roughly three years’ time.

A replica Czech-made Avia BH 5 aeroplane will next week take to the skies
as part of a re-enactment of a 1923 air race between Prague and Brussels.
The original race 85 years ago was won by a Czech - Zdenek Lhota - flying
in exactly the same model, and this event will commemorate what was a proud
moment for Czech aviation history.
