Current AffairsWomen get short end of stick in distribution of municipal budgets, survey finds
A fresh survey by the NGO Forum 50%, which strives for equal rights for
both genders, suggests that towns and villages in the Czech Republic spend
significantly more on men’s needs and interests than women’s. According
to the survey, seven out of eight municipalities favored men in their
budget distribution. In one case, only 18 percent of a town’s funds went
to activities and resources for women. The author of the analysis, Marcela
Adamusová, explains the main findings of the study.

Current AffairsGender equality campaigners mortified as Nečas unveils all-male cabinet
Tortuous negotiations on who will fill key posts in the new centre-right
cabinet appear to have ended in agreement, with the final pieces of the
jigsaw falling into place for new prime minister Petr Nečas. His Civic
Democrats seem to have made considerable concessions, with the powerful
ministries of finance, foreign affairs and the interior all going to
smaller coalition allies. But surprisingly – and for the first time in
eight years – there’s not a single woman amongst them.

Current AffairsNGO: preferential votes played key role in election of more women to lower house
Last month’s election saw more women than ever before elected to the
Czech Republic’s Chamber of Deputies: 44 (some 22 percent of all MPs).
The three centre-right parties holding talks on forming the next government
have since put forward three women politicians – Miroslava Němcová,
Kateřina Klasnová, and Vlasta Parkanová – for important posts: the
speaker of the lower house, and deputy chairpersons, respectively. A little
earlier I spoke to Michaela Appeltová of Forum 50 percent – an NGO aimed
at promoting the role of women in politics, and asked her how she viewed
this year’s election.

Current AffairsExperts decry 25% “gender pay gap” between Czech women, Czech men
World Equal Pay Day was marked for the first time in the Czech Republic on
Thursday, with successful businesswomen among those attending events to
draw attention to the gap in salaries between women and men. Statistics
suggest the gender pay gap in this country is around 25% - i.e. on average
Czech women earn one quarter less than Czech men. Earlier we spoke to Petr
Pavlík, associate professor of gender studies at Charles University, and
asked him more about the gender pay gap.

Current AffairsNGOs look to bring back spirit of activism on 100th Women’s Day
Monday is International Women’s Day, and in 2010 that means one hundred
years since the holiday was introduced. The idea to highlight the struggle
for women’s rights around the world picked up a different tone in
communist countries like Czechoslovakia though, and was largely discarded
after 1989. Now some NGOs in the Czech Republic want to use the 100th
anniversary to reawaken the spirit of activism that Women’s Day
originally stood for.

Current AffairsEuropean Contact Group fighting for gender equality
Mum behind the wheel of a truck, while dad stays at home to look after the
children. While this concept might seem completely normal to most kids,
Czech children may still find the idea shocking, at least according to the
European Contact Group, a non-profit organization that promotes equal
opportunities for men and women. Within a broader effort to break that
stereotype they have produced special work sheets to help teachers in
kindergartens and primary schools address the issue.
