Czech BooksFrench connections and European visions
Hello and welcome to Czech Books, which this week has a French accent. It
would be hard to overstate the very important and longstanding relationship
between the Czech and French cultures. Historically many writers and
artists such as Alfons Mucha, Toyen and more recently, Milan Kundera, have
found a home in France, and the tradition continues today with the
translator and writer Patrik Ouředník, whose very powerful and remarkable
book, Europeana, we'll be discussing today.

The second annual KomiksFEST, which claims to be one of the biggest
festivals of its kind in Central Europe, is currently in full swing here
in
Prague. Cinemas, theatres and galleries all over the Czech capital are
running posters, comics and cartoon exhibitions, while there are also film
and theatre performances inspired by comics. R.F. spoke with the programme
director and one of the founders of the festival, Tomas Matejicek, and
started by asking what led him to establish the festival in the first

ArtsTichy exhibition, Festival of French Film
The House at the Stone Bell, situated on Prague's Old Town Square, is
currently exhibiting works of one of the country's most famous artists -
Frantisek Tichy. Although he is mainly known for his paintings of
harlequins and clowns, Tichy worked on over three hundred pieces of
graphic art and hundreds of drawings and paintings. Until March next year,
visitors will have the chance to see some 500 works which include
paintings, illustrations, samples of posters, and less-known artistic
jewelry and scripts for theatre plays that Tichy found much interest in
from the early stage of his life as an artist. The exhibition was
organised by the City Gallery Prague thanks to a number of galleries and
private collectors who lent Tichý's work from their collections. According
to Jana Orlikova, the author of the exhibition, it is one of a kind as it
is the biggest display of Tichy's work since his death some forty years
ago:
