Mladá Boleslav A rumbling engine drowns out the sounds of fellow passengers on the bus –somehow fitting on a visit to Mladá Boleslav, a town synonymous with cars and car engines. A little over a century ago, the first Czech bicycle, the first motorcycle, and eventually the first motorised buggy rolled out of what was then a modest factory in the town owned by mechanic Václav Laurin and former bookseller Václav Klement. Karlin Musical Theatre during floods in 2002 It was exactly three years ago that devastating floods swept through the Czech Republic. One of the most seriously affected areas was the Prague district of Karlin, where flood waters were up to four metres deep. At the heart of the district one of its main landmarks, the Karlin Musical Theatre, was completely wrecked. It had been a hugely popular venue, celebrated for its operettas and musicals, but has stood empty ever since - a sombre reminder of the drama of 2002. But now a huge renovation is underway, preserving what can be kept of the original 19th century building, but introducing state-of-the-art new equipment. Martin Mikule met the theatre's producer Jan Krehla at the busy building site in Karlin to see how work is getting on.  More

ArtsCzech musical Hamlet aims to conquer Broadway

Hamlet - an original Czech musical composed and written by Czech hit maker Janek Ledecky. It's based on Shakespeare's classic and was a great success with Czech audiences when it was premiered six years ago - instead of the 300 performances that were originally planned, its run extended to no less than 600. The musical was also a hit in the Slovak capital Bratislava and has been now also adapted into an English version. There are plans to bring it to the United States next year.  More

This music comes from one of the most successful Czech musicals, 'Joan of Arc'. Recently, the Ta Fantastika theatre in the centre of Prague kicked off the last one hundred performances of this original Czech musical, written by Jiri Hubac, with music by Ondrej Soukup and lyrics by his wife, Gabriela Osvaldova. But that does not mark the end of the musical altogether, because later it will travel abroad.  More
