The collapse of Bohemians football club at the beginning of what would have been its centenary year was a very sad development for the Czech game. The club's bankruptcy was followed by expulsion from the second division, and it appeared we had seen the last of the green and white Kangaroos. But Bohemians' loyal fans aren't giving up so easily, and have launched a campaign to try and revive the club.  More

Ivan Hasek, photo: CTK Martin Hasek, younger brother of ice hockey goaltender Dominik, has joined the Russian football club Dinamo Moscow. Meanwhile, another former Czech international, Ivan Hasek, is set to return to Japan, this time as a coach. The Czech Under 20s team have been having mixed fortunes at the World Junior Championships. Experienced Czech drivers Karel Loprais and Tomas Tomecek will be hoping to do well in the famous Paris to Dakar rally, as will Jana Tylsova, the first woman to ever take part in the famous race.  More

You may recall that Radio Prague ran a competition earlier this year in which we asked who you considered the most interesting Czech, living or dead. Someone from our Russia section told me something interesting: they got a few letters in which people chose the Czech football captain, Pavel Nedved. As almost every single player on the Czech national team plays abroad, it occurred to me that many people's only connection with the Czech Republic might be that their favourite team features a Czech player, be it Petr Cech at French club Rennes, or Patrik Berger at Portsmouth. Indeed when Vladimir Smicer joined Liverpool - Berger's old club - the fans had a song which went "he's Czech, he's great, he's Patrik Berger's mate".  More
