On Thursday morning the Czech football team left Prague for the European
Championships in Portugal, with fans around the country hoping they can
win the tournament for the first time since 1976. Among the stars of the
Czech team should be striker Milan Baros, who has scored a very impressive
16 goals in 25 international games - not bad for a 22-year-old. Before the
Czech team left for Euro 2004, Ian Willoughby spoke to Milan Baros, and
began by asking him how the Czech team's preparations for the tournament
had gone.

The Czech Republic have advanced to the second phase of the World Ice
Hockey Championships, after securing first place in their group with a 5:1
win over Germany in Prague on Wednesday night. The Czech football team,
meanwhile, were beaten in a home friendly by Japan. And boxer Rudolf
Kraj's dreams of a second Olympic medal have been dashed.

Sparta Prague have sacked their fourth manager in two years, Jiri Kotrba.
The Czech football league champions are ten points behind leaders Ostrava,
with only seven games to go. In ice hockey, defending champions Slavia
Prague have made a remarkable comeback in the Extraliga semi-finals.
Further afield, Czech star Petr Nedved has scored his 300th NHL goal, and
against a Czech goalie to boot. In tennis, Jiri Novak has been beaten in

Legendary ice hockey goaltender Dominik Hasek's season is over due to
injury. At 39 can he ever return to the ice? Jaromir Jagr, meanwhile, has
topped a table of the highest earning hockey players of all time. As the
Czech football season resumes, international coach Brueckner will be
missing several key players in a friendly against Italy next week. Young
high-jumper Jaroslav Baba is in fine form, though in the biathlon Katerina

Martin Hasek, younger brother of ice hockey goaltender Dominik, has joined
the Russian football club Dinamo Moscow. Meanwhile, another former Czech
international, Ivan Hasek, is set to return to Japan, this time as a
coach. The Czech Under 20s team have been having mixed fortunes at the
World Junior Championships. Experienced Czech drivers Karel Loprais and
Tomas Tomecek will be hoping to do well in the famous Paris to Dakar
rally, as will Jana Tylsova, the first woman to ever take part in the
famous race.

Young Czech football star Milan Baros has a broken leg and will miss
Saturday's international against Vienna. However, Baros has joined his
team-mates in Prague and tells us why he thinks the Czechs are doing so
well, how happy he is to see his old club Ostrava on top of the
Czech league and how important it is for him to have another Czech player
at his club, Liverpool. We also have news of rising Czech ice hockey star

Only days after the euphoria of qualifying for Euro 2004, there was bad
news for Czech football fans at the weekend, when star Milan Baros was
seriously injured; his Czech team-mate Vladimir Smicer describes just how
Baros broke his fibula. Sparta Prague have lost to Liberec, just days
before their opening Champions League game against Chelsea. In ice hockey,
the new Extraliga season began badly for champions Slavia and favourites
Pardubice, who both lost on Friday. Vera Pospisilova ended the season on a
high with gold in the discus at the World Athletics Final in Monaco, and
canoeist Martin Doktor took two medals at the Flatwater World
Championships.
