So far the Euro 2004 football tournament couldn't be going better for the Czechs. On Saturday the Czech national squad faced the Netherlands, dangerous but traditional rivals by now: the Czechs fought Holland not only in qualification where they won the edge, but also faced them at the European Championships four years ago, where Holland contributed to the Czech Republic's early exit. On Thursday morning the Czech football team left Prague for the European Championships in Portugal, with fans around the country hoping they can win the tournament for the first time since 1976. Among the stars of the Czech team should be striker Milan Baros, who has scored a very impressive 16 goals in 25 international games - not bad for a 22-year-old. Before the Czech team left for Euro 2004, Ian Willoughby spoke to Milan Baros, and began by asking him how the Czech team's preparations for the tournament had gone.  More

Jiri Kotrba, photo: CTK Sparta Prague have sacked their fourth manager in two years, Jiri Kotrba. The Czech football league champions are ten points behind leaders Ostrava, with only seven games to go. In ice hockey, defending champions Slavia Prague have made a remarkable comeback in the Extraliga semi-finals. Further afield, Czech star Petr Nedved has scored his 300th NHL goal, and against a Czech goalie to boot. In tennis, Jiri Novak has been beaten in the third round of the big-money Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami.  More

Jaromir Jagr, meanwhile, has topped a table of the highest earning hockey players of all time. As the Czech football season resumes, international coach Brueckner will be missing several key players in a friendly against Italy next week. Ivan Hasek, photo: CTK Martin Hasek, younger brother of ice hockey goaltender Dominik, has joined the Russian football club Dinamo Moscow. Meanwhile, another former Czech international, Ivan Hasek, is set to return to Japan, this time as a coach. The Czech Under 20s team have been having mixed fortunes at the World Junior Championships. Experienced Czech drivers Karel Loprais and Tomas Tomecek will be hoping to do well in the famous Paris to Dakar rally, as will Jana Tylsova, the first woman to ever take part in the famous race.  More

Milan Baros, Photo: http://uk.sports.yahoo.com Only days after the euphoria of qualifying for Euro 2004, there was bad news for Czech football fans at the weekend, when star Milan Baros was seriously injured; his Czech team-mate Vladimir Smicer describes just how Baros broke his fibula. Sparta Prague have lost to Liberec, just days before their opening Champions League game against Chelsea. In ice hockey, the new Extraliga season began badly for champions Slavia and favourites Pardubice, who both lost on Friday. Vera Pospisilova ended the season on a high with gold in the discus at the World Athletics Final in Monaco, and canoeist Martin Doktor took two medals at the Flatwater World Championships.  More
