Photo: MFDnes, 13.6.07 It has long been taken as a given that in the 1980s President Vaclav Klaus - then employed as an economist at the Czechoslovak National Bank - was monitored by the StB, communist Czechoslovakia's secret police. But until now, concrete evidence was lacking. Not any more: on Wednesday a Czech newspaper, Mlada Fronta Dnes, revealed that it had uncovered microfiche dating back to the 1980s, confirming that Mr Klaus had indeed been watched.  More

George W. Bush, photo: CTK The sounds of the American anthem welcomed US President George W. Bush to Prague Castle on Tuesday for talks with his Czech counterpart, Vaclav Klaus, as well as with Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek. The talks were the first stop of Mr Bush's European visit, which includes, first and foremost, attending the G8 Summit in Germany, where Mr Bush will head on Tuesday evening. Mr Bush's stop-off in Prague, though brief, was not unimportant: he was in the Czech capital to discuss a number of issues, among them a US request to station part of its missile defense system in the Czech Republic. Also discussed were other issues including US visa policy. More

The Czech Agrarian Chamber has announced it will stage protests next month against supermarket chains stocking the fewest Czech food products on their shelves. Unhappy about growing imports of foodstuffs, the Agrarian Chamber first plans to compare the percentage of Czech-made products in different supermarket chains and then select two with the lowest share. In late June, discontented farmers will build roadblocks outside the supermarkets to halt the delivery of goods. But that part of their plan has met with mixed reactions.  More
