The Czech paper Mlada Fronta Dnes on Thursday carried a dramatic headline that seemed to confirm British fears of an influx of penniless Czech Roma after the Czech Republic joined the EU. The headline read "Embassy under Roma Siege" and the article reports on Czech citizens - apparently mainly Roma - who had failed to find a job in Britain and had no money to get back home, and were now demanding help from the Czech Embassy in London. However, when Radio Prague spoke with David Frous from the Czech Embassy in London, we learned that the situation was far less alarming than the Czech daily had suggested.  More

Brno This Tuesday, representatives of Roma communities in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary have come together in the Moravian capital Brno to find ways of helping Roma to feel less isolated in society and improve their social standing in Central Europe. Education, employment, health care, social services, housing, and activities for the younger generation are being discussed by Roma social workers, teachers, local authority officials and representatives of ordinary Roma citizens at the two-day conference, which is part of a broader four-year project. One step to promote Roma interests in the Czech Republic was already made earlier this month when the country's first ever Roma Parliament came to being. The parliament serves as an umbrella organisation and is currently made up of 34 registered organisations and 57 individual members. Roma's housing Three weeks before European Union enlargement, the United Nations released a report saying that some population groups in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia are threatened by poverty. While acknowledging that much progress has been made in the four Central European states, the UN report says these countries have to come up with specific policies to fight poverty or they risk having a significant section of the labour force as unemployable. Kerry Skyring spoke earlier to the director of the regional office of the United Nations Development Programme Ben Slay. Kerry first asked Mr Slay what progress has been made in improving social problems in the region.  More
