Talking PointThe expat entrepreneurs
This is the story of three English-speaking expats, who arrived in Prague
during the post-Velvet Revolution “golden-age” and who ended up
becoming entrepreneurs, serving the very communities of which they had
become a part. Todd Benson, Bryn Perkins and Martin Howlings are the
respective heads of Prague.tv, Praguemonitor.com and Expats.cz, three
websites that both serve English-speaking Czechs in Prague as well as give
English-speakers across the world a window into this small country at the
heart of Europe. Today, the expat community in Prague has morphed from the
amorphous collection of idealists that first came to the country, often
quite literally to “do nothing” - into a bustling mix of media-types,
teachers, students, businessmen and women and everything in between,
something that is reflected in the evolution of these three websites.

One on OneErik Best – Founder of The Fleet Sheet and Final Word
My guest in One on One this week is respected Prague-based journalist Erik
Best. Erik came to Prague from the US in the early 90s after completing
degrees in foreign relations, the Russian language and business. Shortly
after his arrival, he founded the Fleet Sheet – a serious daily bulletin
published by him and his staff highlighting important business and
political stories for subscribers. Later, he added Final Word - a
widely-read, often pointedly witty but also critical opinion piece. Both
are discussed in our interview. But first, we began by talking a little
about Erik Best’s initial decision to settle in Prague.

Current AffairsPrague hosts new festival of English-language plays
The English-speaking community in Prague has few chances to see drama
performed in English. But this is just about to change, as The Prague Post
- the country's leading English-language newspaper - has decided to
encourage English-language theatre in the city, and founded its own

Current AffairsThe Prague Post Playwriting Contest - fostering English-language drama in Prague
With a large English-speaking community, it's perhaps surprising that
Prague does not have an English-language theatre scene like those that can
be found in other major European capitals like Paris and Berlin. Now a new
playwriting competition sponsored by The Prague Post could help rectify
this situation. Offering a first prize of 20,000 CZK and productions for
the three best scripts, it is hoped that this drama contest could boost
interest in English-language theatre in Prague. More

and how those publications face new challenges in their struggle to
survive. After the discussion, Alena Wratislavova talked to the organizer
Jan Krc, who summarized some of the issues discussed.
