drugs in the Czech Republic the situation may be stabilizing or - at the

Current AffairsCzech heroin smugglers behind bars in Bangkok home "within months"
The authorities in Thailand announced recently that two Czech men serving
long prison sentences for heroin smuggling will be allowed to return home,
to serve their sentences in a Czech prison. The announcement came three
months after the Czech Republic and Thailand signed an agreement allowing
prisoner exchanges, the first step in what their relatives hope will lead
to their eventual release. But how long the two will stay in prison once
they return to this country is still unclear.

Under the current law on drugs, people can possess "not more than a
small amount" of marijuana, though what constitutes a "small
amount" is not specified. Recently, Deputy Prime Minister Petr Mares
caused divisions within the cabinet by proposing a clearer, more liberal
drug law. It would make possession of less than a fixed amount (some
reports said enough for 250 joints) a misdemeanour, not a crime. On the
eve of Thursday's International Day Against Drug Abuse, Petr Mares

The debate over the decriminalization of marijuana continues to rage
between lawmakers, doctors and ordinary people the world over. However,
laws banning the possession and use of marijuana remain in force in most
countries. Martin Hrobsky reports on a protest in the Czech capital this
Saturday which aims to change that.
